ΕΝ 16001:2009
ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
The European Standard EN 16001 concerns all companies aiming at reducing their energy consumption and footprint. It also applies to companies already involved in the Emissions Trading Scheme according to EC/87/2003, since implementation of the standard leads to significant energy reductions, thus emissions reductions. Furthermore, companies already certified with ISO 14001:2004 have already similar documentation and operation in place, so EN 16001:2009 may be easily integrated.
WHAT IS EN 16001:2009
According to EU’s Guideline, the member countries should commit to a 9% annual reduction of energy consumption. Under this framework, CEN has issued the ΕΝ 16001 management standard, that can be applied to any type of private or public organisation aiming at improving energy efficiency by analysing and optimising energy usage. By energy usage all types of energy are included, such as electricity, natural gas, liquid and solid fuels, LPG and compressed air.
The Plan-Do-Check-Act principle also applies to this standard. Furthermore, its structure is similar to that of ISO 14001:2004, so it can be easily integrated with Environmental Management or Quality Management Systems.
